Jordan Brand Reimagines Iconic 'Genie' Ad with Niecy Nash, Teyana Taylor, and Regan Aliyah
Jordan Brand has brought back its beloved 1991 "Genie" commercial, this time with a fresh, female-centric twist. The new two-minute film, "Generational Greatness," features Niecy Nash as the genie, emerging from a Nike Air Jordan 6 Infrared to grant a wish to Ironheart star Regan Aliyah. The campaign aims to connect with Gen Z and broaden the brand's appeal.
A Modern Take on a Classic
The original "Genie" ad starred Spike Lee as Mars Blackmon, who summoned Little Richard from a magic lamp. In the updated version, Regan Aliyah's character accidentally triggers the genie by rubbing her damaged Air Jordan 6 Infrared shoes. Niecy Nash appears, offering Aliyah a chance at magic.
Instead of a simple wish, Nash presents Aliyah with visions of powerful women who have made significant impacts, including Teyana Taylor, basketball player Napheesa Collier, choreographer Bada Lee, and rapper Awich. Ultimately, Aliyah wishes for "all of it," leading Nash to conjure a new pair of Air Jordans, embodying Jordan's "All or Nothing" tagline.
Generational Greatness and Brand Reset
The "Generational Greatness" campaign is part of Jordan Brand's strategic "brand reset" aimed at capturing the Gen Z market and re-engaging existing fans, especially as the brand approaches its 40th anniversary in 2025. Despite a 12% decrease in revenue in fiscal year 2025, the brand has seen its engagement rate triple since the start of 2025, indicating a strong resurgence in momentum.
Women Take Center Stage
Historically a male-dominated brand, Jordan is intentionally expanding its audience. The "Generational Greatness" ad, along with other recent campaigns like "Unbannable" and a Broadway-style ensemble featuring NBA and WNBA stars, highlights this shift. The campaign specifically focuses on women, with the Air Jordan 6 representing a symbol of breaking barriers, much like Michael Jordan's first championship. The broader campaign also introduces the Heir Series 2, a new silhouette inspired by women in basketball.
Corporate Commitment to Equality
Jordan Brand emphasizes its commitment to gender equality not just in marketing but also at a corporate level. The senior leadership team includes women in key roles such as president, VP of sports marketing, general manager of basketball, and head of communications, demonstrating a visible and impactful presence of women in leadership positions. This approach is part of a larger strategy by parent company Nike Inc. to shift its marketing focus towards performance and distinction within key sports.
